Today, most cathodes used in lithium-ion batteries are made by coating an aluminum substrate with active ingredients and conductive materials dispersed in NMP using PVDF as binder. NMP is a hazardous chemical facing increasing global regulations restricting its use. Researchers at PPG have developed a drop in binder - solvent system with more benign solvent that also offers performance advantages in terms of battery performance and solvent use.
The team decided to use Aspen simulation software to quantify the benefits and predict how this new solvent would perform in existing coating and solvent recovery equipment. In this session from Beyond OPTIMIZE™ 21, learn how the team built a model to demonstrate that not only would the solvent work in most equipment, but that it offered significant energy saving and capacity increase potential.
